About
Nothing is black and white when it comes to interracial families. My dissertation examines new ways of imagining families and individuals, even within the seemingly rigid racial hierarchies of nineteenth-century America. It investigates various ways that certain white Americans imagined black-white families from 1830-1915. I argue that these families create the conditions for racial ambiguity and highlight the instability of individual identities.
