About
Although I'm interested in many aspects of religion in American culture, my dissertation is cultural history of travel in the hippie era. Looking at various practices and representations of long-term youth travel -- from hitchhiking to hippie vans -- I argue that many travelers learned to become "seekers" on the road, with their very bodies. In "spiritual-but-not-religious-worlds" in which religious practices may not be clearly "marked," I argue travel has become an important, if contested, node of religious meaning making and spiritual practice.
